Before taking over the RNC, Priebus led the Republican Party of Wisconsin. During that time, Republicans picked up a senate seat, the governorship and two House seats. The state also came out ahead by earning the majority in both chambers of the state congress. He still has connections to the state including a relationship with fellow Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan who championed Trump’s choice of Priebus for chief of staff.

Reince considered himself a Republican by the time he was a teenager. At just 16, he was volunteering for several political campaigns in and around the Kenosha, Wisconsin area. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, majoring in English and Political Science. He belonged to the Delta Chi fraternity and graduated cum laude in 1994. Prior to that Priebus served as student body president and was president of the College Republicans.

After graduating, he enrolled at the University of Miami Law School where he continued serving as clerk for the Wisconsin State of Appeals, Wisconsin Supreme Court and US District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He also interned at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in California. Priebus graduated from law school cum laude with a JD degree in 1998 after serving as president of the law school student body.

While he may have made a failed attempt at running for the Senate in 2004, Priebus thrived at the game of party politics which led to him becoming the youngest ever chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party. The success brought him national attention and a job in Washington as RNC general counsel under a chairman he would soon be vying to replace. He has had a successful run with the RNC to say the least.
