Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone (nickname: Sly) came from a humble background. The child of an immigrant father, Sly had a rough beginning in the Hell’s Kitchen section of New York City, starting from the beginning when the obstetrician severed a nerve in his face during his delivery. But true to his strong character, this impediment would one day become a memorable trademark during his acting career.
Sly’s father Frank was a hairdresser and beautician. His mother Jackie was an astrologer, dancer and at one point in her working life promoted women’s wrestling. In the early 1950’s his family moved to Washington, DC, where his parents would later divorce when he was 9 years old.
Sly has talked publicly and in detail about his desperate decision to make the soft core pornography film, The Party at Kitty and Stud’s. This role, while taken as an act of desperation by a then homeless actor in NYC, comes back decades later to play a defining moment role in Sly’s life, showing his true strength of character. Following Sly’s ascension to that of a true Hollywood star, the film’s producers attempted to blackmail him for $100,000 – or otherwise they would release the film. Sly, a man of character, laughed off the offer and went public about his taking the role. Indeed, in a day and age when stars “accidentally” have sex tapes released, Sly’s performance has been said to be almost Rated PG in nature.
A lot has been made of Sly’s unique ethnic make-up. His father was Italian, while his mother’s is half French (Brittany) and half German. By the early 1980’s this background, combined with his rugged American persona, saw his garnering him massive international appeal.
In 1999, valuing education and seeking to set an example not only for his own children, but for all the young people who looked up to him as a role-model, Sly petitioned the President of the University of Miami to accept, in lieu of credit hours, his life’s work to complete his degree. With this, he was able to add his achievement of a Bachelor of Fine Arts to his already impressive and lengthy resume.
Sly continues to be an active and popular actor, writer and producer in Hollywood, despite being “out of the closet” in Hollywood as a Republican.
